Posted by Agricultural Communication Services  on Monday, Jul. 19, 2004
STILLWATER, Okla. - Horse enthusiasts looking to pick up the latest in practical management tips for their animals should register now to attend the Oklahoma State University Annual Horse Owner's Symposium Sept. 25.

"Our intent is to provide usable information that can be implemented to increase the health of horses," said Dave Freeman, OSU Cooperative Extension equine specialist. "We are offering seminars and demonstrations that will be of importance to all horse owners, regardless of the number of horses owned or investment level."

The symposium will take place 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the College of Veterinary Medicine's McElroy Hall Auditorium, located at the corner of McFarland and Farm Rd. on OSU's Stillwater campus.

Cost is $30 per participant, with lunch being provided for those who register by Sept. 15. Registration forms are available through all OSU Cooperative Extension county offices, usually listed under "County Government" in local telephone directories.

Symposium sessions will include managing dietary energy sources for horses, management of the growing horse, healthy foaling, on-the-farm care of colic and management of foals with crooked legs.

Participants also will receive insight on equine cardiac examinations, evaluation of cool shipped semen, equine lameness examinations and force plate analysis of equine lameness.

Sessions will be led by OSU veterinarians Dr. Charles MacAllister, Dr. David Moll, Dr. Reed Holyoak, Dr. Todd Holbrook, Dr. Bradford Bentz and Dr. Dustin Devine; Steve Cooper, OSU assistant professor of animal science; and Freeman.

The symposium is sponsored by OSU's College of Veterinary Medicine and Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources.

Anyone interested in obtaining additional information about the Sept. 25 event should contact the OSU College of Veterinary Medicine's Outreach Office at 405-744-7672.
